I am considering a new Contender barrel for a Montana elk hunt this fall,If I get a .375JDJ, it will be 14", with a scope (Burris 3X9), and a muzzle brake. My question is: How will the recoil from this setup compare to what I felt with the 45/70? (Sorry - I have no idea of the load I was shooting, except that I think it was a 300 gr. bullet).

..375 JDJ is quite pleasant to shoot. I don't remember my exact load but the book claimed roughly 1900-2000 fps with a 220gr bullet. I have a 14" magna ported barrel with a 2 power scope. Your variable power scope will add even more weight to the system. Before I developed CTS I used to shoot using a shooting stick - one hand on the gun and one on the stick.

The recoil will be a less with the muzzle brake. I've shot both the 45-70 and the 375JDJ, both with brakes, and the 375 was easier on the hand. We were shooting 285's in the JDJ and 400's in the 45-70. Both were considerably easier on the hand than the 358JDJ that I owned without a brake. I can't think of a barrel that I can compare it to that you may have shot. It was more than a hot 35Rem in 14" unported, less than an unported 10" .444Marlin with no scope.

Hi Rick I shoot the .375 JDJ a lot 52gr of AA2520 with a 270 Horn. The recoil is not bad, that gives 2000+ ft/sec and it will take anything from Rats to Elephants. If recoil is a problem go with the 338 or 309 JDJ or Bellm 300 B&S. My 375 JDJ has about 38 lb-ft of recoil so it kicks but it don't hurt. Any of the biggys will thump you, but in the heat of the battle you want even feel it. I think the 375 is close to the 45/70 but I'm not sure so don't take that to the bank. My big bore is the 444 Marlin bbl made from a 44 mag chambered by Bellm Contenders, in Ut. it shoots a 325 gr cast Fusilier at 1900, for RTP of 118.9 at 50 yd. The 375 H&H has 96.8 with 300 gr at 2500 ft/sec. I don't think you will be bored with any of them, just enjoy.

I think you will really like the .375JDJ. I've had mine now for about eight years and I have really enjoyed it.

Also, don't worry about the recoil. I'm not a big person and I can manage it. Of course, I worked up to the full house loads with the 300 grain bullets.

I ordered mine with Magna Porting and I think it really helps to control recoil. One thing though, if you are shooting from the bench, don't forget to put some kind of pad under the elbow of your shooting arm. The recoil comes straight back and drives your elbow into the bench. It can become bothersome after shooting a number of rounds.

I put a Leupold 2X scope on it. It's sighted in at 200 yards. Here in Oregon where I hunt, I don't expect any shots beyond that. Also, do order the T'SOB scope mount. The scope won't move.

I also have the 6.5JDJ which I've used the last couple of deer seasons and a .222 for varmints. I'm thinking about a .22lr barrel for my next purchase.

Anyway, good luck and have fun.

Can you make a 375 JDJ from a 375 win barrel. It comes in 14" with a muzzle break. Is this really that much better than a 35 Rem or the 375 Win?

From sharps@mail.coos.or.us Charles J. Sharps Ph.D

Glenn, I think it could be done. However JD of SSK industries will not rechamber a 375 Winchester barrel. The 375 JD Jones is a proprietary cartridge . You could contact Bullberry at : bullbery@tcd.net Fred = has a similar cartridge and I believe he rechambers. Charlie

I don't know if you can do the rechamber - JD may not sell the reamers. The 375 JDJ is absolutely better than the 375 Win or the never should have been produced 35 rem. It will go bang when you pull the trigger and you can load it with a wider range of loads than the win.

Yes, Mike Bellm will rechamber the bbl and add a nice Redfield Magna mount for a lot less than JDJ will. Tell him I sent you. I don't get anything, he is just good and does the best quality work I have ever seen. Bellm Contenders Box 459,585 N.Hwy 155 Cleveland Ut 84518 801-653-2530 Fax 801-653-2531 C.H.
