357 HERRETT LOADS

Jerry,

> What powder do you prefer for your 357 Herrett? Is your barrel 14"?

IMR-4227, W-W 680, H-110, W-W 296, Magnum Pistol (an H-110 data powder), MP-5744 and some rifle powders like H-322. No favorite yet; all do very well from an accuracy standpoint. I will eventually pick the one that provides highest velocity for maximum safe pressure if its accuracy is OK. Have not determined that yet as the maximum loads for various powders in the T/C Loadbook (as well as other sources) give markedly differing pressures.

So far the IMR-4227 load is the hottest but have not worked up equivalents in the other powders yet. I have about 5 cartridges going in parallel right now so it takes lots of time.

I can spend eight hours at the range and still not fire all that I have loaded ahead for testing. I take it slow and easy, approach it carefully, and get it right - and enjoy every minute. Cancer patients tend to do that - life is (can be) short.

Yes, Super 14" barrel.

The .357 Herrett is much more versatile than my .35 Remington. I load it with .357 HBWC's over 5.7 gr. Unique or 700X and take it to our police pistol range where 900 fps is the velocity limit (except for .22LR). This practice causes .35 Remington shoulders to set back so that they misfire on subsequent reloading. With the .357 Herrett's rimmed case, this is not a problem. While my kids practice with their revolvers, I get in some trigger control with the Contender.

God Bless!

Norm
